It is the race that defines the
thoroughbred, The Epsom Derby on Saturday and we preview this and all 7 races
on one of the highlights of the horse racing calendar.

R1: Cazoo Handicap

A 1-mile 2f handicap for
three-year-olds gets the racing underway on Derby Day and War Horse is our pick
for the winner. He will love the distance and posted a career best when winning
at Haydock last month. The handicapper has been kind to him, and he can win
again. Mr Big Stuff is our alternative selection with his Jockey Tyler Heard
claiming 5lb. He is much better than his finishing position in his last race and
potentially well handicapped.

R2: Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Group 3)

The lightly races Bashkirova is
the favourite for this though she failed to win on her latest run in a Listed
race where she was beaten by Mrs Fitzherbert who also reappears here. There
is no obvious reason to suggest she can reverse those places and at the odds
Mrs Fitzherbert is our selection. Of the remainder, Potapova should improve
from her last run but has found life tough in Group company. The outsider of
the field, Flash Betty was useful last year, gets weight off most of the other
runners and could cause a surprise result.

R3: Diomed Stakes (Group 3)

Modern News is in great
form having won his last 2 races and he can win again here. This is his first
Group race, but he looks progressive, is lightly raced and he would not have to
improve much to win. Mustasaabeq must be respected having finished a close 2nd
in a Group 2 in April, however he is not the most consistent and typically
fails to put a sequence of good runs together. Of the outsiders, Escobar should
be considered. He has a bit to find on official ratings, but he won his last race,
and his style of racing suggests the smaller field size than he is used to
should be in his favour.

R4: ‚Dash‘ Handicap (Heritage Handicap)

Known as the fastest race in the
world this will be run at its usual electric speed. Mokaatil won the race last
year and returns here in a similar level of form He was quite an easy winner of
the race and whilst he is now higher in the handicap he should not be too far
away at the finish. Stone Of Destiny is a regular in this type of event
and he can get his first win since 2020. He is 10lb lower in the weights than
when he was 3rd last year and his last run was encouraging enough to
think that he can finally get his head in front.

R5: Cazoo Derby

Run this year in memory of the great Lester Piggott who won this race an incredible 9 times, this looks a very good renewal of the race. Desert Crown has a very big reputation, and he sets the standard based off his prep race win in the Dante Stakes at York. He is the most likely winner but there are some more attractive options at bigger prices.

Aidan O’Brien has an unmatched Derby record and Stone Age looks to be the best of his three runners with Ryan Moore booked to ride. It took him a while to show his ability having ran 5 times last season without a victory, but he was very impressive in his trail at Leopardstown which gives him a great chance. Another one to look at is Nation’s Pride, one of three Godolphin runners. He is run just the once this season and couldn’t have won any easier. It’s difficult to evaluate just how good he is but he certainly could make the frame and is our each-way pick.

R6: Northern Dancer Handicap

Midnight Legacy was last seen in a hurdle race, but
he is back on the flat looking to win this race for the 2nd time. If
he is in the same form, then he should not be out of the places. Aaddeey is the
class horse in the race, but he looks high up in the handicap though he jockey
does take off 5lb which would give him a chance. Soapy Stevens is the other
runner to consider. He is yet to win this year but is consistent and if today is
not his day, expect him to win soon.

R7: JRA Tokyo Trophy Handicap

Many A Star looks to be in good form having won a good
Handicap at Ascot in May however this race is tougher and its worth looking at
a few at bigger prices. The first of these is our pick Bergerac. His
last start was slightly disappointing, but he has been very consistent this
season apart from that. He is yet to run at Epsom but that should not be too
much of a worry and seems to enjoy big field races. Muscika has been falling
down the handicap and is certainly on a winning mark, he will be winning soon
if today isn’t his day. The last to look at is Rayong. He has been running over
shorter distances recently and is worth a try back at this distance.

Jetzt zu RaceBets

The Epsom Derby Festival kicks
off on Friday with Ladies Day, featuring the most important race of the year
for the Classic generation Fillies, the Epsom Oaks. We preview this and all 7
races from Epsom Derby.

R1: British EBF Stakes

Some of the best two-year-olds in the country turn up here looking to emulate recent winner Pinatubo who went on to be top class after winning this. This looks an open race with Commander Striker your likely favourite. He recorded his first win last time at Bath and whilst he has been running over shorter distances, stamina should not be a problem. He is worth opposing though as it’s the horse that finished 2nd to him at Bath, Estate, who could be worth siding with. He meets his rival on much better terms today and cannot be dismissed at double the odds!

Both Legend Of Xandu and Blatant have had plenty of racecourse experience and were both impressive winners and can easily follow up. The other of note is Silencer who only made his debut last week. He should improve markedly for that run and could cause a minor surprise in this opening race.

R2: World Pool Handicap

Carazon Espinado won this race last year and has an
excellent record at Epsom having won 4 times and finished 2nd on 3
occasions from his 10 appearances at the track. He is not in great form at present,
but he saves his best for Epsom so is our each way selection. Oh This Is Us is
another with good course form and he ran respectably last time out and could
well be in the picture near the finish. Excel Power is your likely favourite
having completed a hattrick of victories, he must give weight away to all his
rivals but looks a classy sort who is improving compared to many of these who
their best days have probably gone.

R3: Coronation Cup (Group 1)

Six runners of which realistically five of these have a chance headed by last year’s winner Pyledriver. He reappears having run in Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and Dubai over the winter months. If he is in the same form as he was last year, that should be good enough to win this. Manobo has also been racing abroad and looks very exciting though slightly disappointed in the Dubai Gold Cup. He has been running over further distances and this looks to be his minimum trip. It would not be a huge surprise if he ended up winning very easily but no one can really know just how good he is.

High Definition ran a much-improved race in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, but he is an expensive horse to follow having disappointed on all his runs outside of Ireland. Hukum has a bit to find on form but is consistent and would not need to improve a lot to win this. He is one to seriously consider. Living Legend is the other who would have a chance. He has won his last 3 but this is a step up in class and connections one or two others should be too good.

R5: Epsom Oaks (Group 1)

John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien have trained the last 8 winners of the Epsom Oaks and it would be no shock to see either one of them win this renewal. John Gosden trains Emily Upjohn and Nashwa with the former looking have the stronger of the chances. Unsurprisingly she has drawn comparisons with the superstar Enable and if she wins this as impressively then she will most likely be made favourite for the likes of the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe and the King George. Nashwa is also unbeaten this season though her form does not look as strong, she is clearly the 2nd string for John Gosden and there are alternatives at bigger odds that are better considered.

Aidan O’Brien has four runners, and you should never rule out any of his representatives in a Classic. Tuesday is bred to win this, being a full sister of 2016 winner Minding but was well beaten in the Irish 1000 Guineas. That was over a distance far too short for her but will obviously need to improve a lot for the step up in distance. Concert Hall finished behind Tuesday but did not have the greatest luck in running so would be no surprise to see her finish in front of her stablemate.

Thoughts Of June won her prep race at Chester though that was a much weaker race, whist Aidan’s final runner, The Algarve was well beaten by Emily Upjohn. She could place at a big price, but it would be one of the biggest surprises in the long history of the race were she to win. One that should not be dismissed despite her odds in Kawida for Ed Walker. The big question mark is whether she can stay the distance but if she can then she can get involved at a big price.

R6: Surrey Stakes (Listed Race)

Quite an open race and the tentative selection is Oscula.
He won the Woodcote Stakes on this card last year and connections hold him in
the highest regard. Dawn Of Liberation is the main danger but he failed to fire
when last seen in a similar grade in race. Bass Player is interesting, he’s
making just his 2nd start so will clearly improve on his winning
debut but will obviously need to now facing much more experienced rivals.

R7: Derby Festival Handicap

The last race looks a difficult one to find a winner with a
competitive handicap over 7 furlongs. Nuvolari is lightly raced and is at the
bottom of the handicap, getting weight all around. His form looks average, but
it would be no surprise if he is a lot better than what he has previously
shown. The one we like is Top Secret. He was unlucky to no win his last start, is
ultra-consistent and has a strong chance of placing if not winning.

Jetzt zu RaceBets

A shade faster than her usual :50 half, she was throttled down from the go and was aching to do more. She found a happy medium down the lane with good energy and galloped out without taking a deep breath. Watching her works this month is a study in a trainer getting a horse to peak at the right time, she looks primed and ready to go.

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. could not have willed this colt to go any slower over the 5 furlongs without disrupting his rhythm. Every time his stablemate, the graded stakes-placed Liam, crept up within breathing distance, the grey powerhouse would lean a little harder into the bridle. For this reason, I believe the shorter 1-1/8 miles distance of this year’s PWC Turf will be more ideal, as he can take a tug in the afternoon. Bringing him in fresh was the barn’s plan, and judging from this work, he certainly puts enough into his training to get himself ready.

HIT THE ROAD

1/16/22

Santa Anita

5 furlongs (T)

:58.40 (1/1)

Hit the Road is due some luck. He came down with a fever the day before the Breeders’ Cup Mile and scratched. Then, due to heavy rain the San Gabriel came off the turf and again the colt was scratched. Unlike Colonel Liam, Hit the Road’s 119-day freshening was not part of Dan Blacker’s plan. Despite that, his colt is working better than ever. A superior work horse on the turf, on Jan. 16 Hit the Road was sharp under jockey Umberto Rispoli. What impressed me most was his ability to sustain his action and energy well beyond the wire, while working alone and having completed his final quarter in a swift :22-1/5. It’s possible the deviation from his original campaign is working in his favor.

LIFE IS GOOD

1/22/22

Palm Beach Downs

5 furlongs

1:00.90 (3/15)

After watching this work I’m not sure I have enough superlatives to describe it. Jaw-droppingly terrific could be one. With regular rider Amelia Green in the irons, Life Is Good set off from the pole like he meant business, and he did. At first a tad high-headed with Amelia tugging at the reins; once he hit the half-mile pole, he settled into a nice rhythm and cruised through the lane with plenty left in the tank. Actually, the best part for me was the gallop-out, all the way to the five-eighths pole. He should, if need- be, get a comfortable stalking trip outside of Knicks Go depending on the breaks for both horses.

SIR WINSTON

1/20/22

Palm Meadows

4 furlongs

:47.80 (1/46)

Given a sharpener here working in company and getting a good time. He started on the outside of his barn mate and stayed there while moving fluidly through the lane. He’s a good horse and is coming into this as well as ever – while never the flashiest workhorse. Proven on dirt and will love the distance. Will be a price play “when” the speed duel ensues.

I. Del Mar Facts

Del Mar is unique in that its
facilities are owned by the State of California and controlled by the 22nd
District Agricultural Association, operators of the Southern California
Exposition, which annually attracts more than 1.5 million visitors from
mid-June through the 4th of July holiday to what is commonly called the “Del
Mar Fair.”

Since 1970, Del Mar racing has been operated by a corporation of prominent California owners, breeders and community leaders known as the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Its original—and continuing—mission was to conduct the sport for the sport’s gain and to channel profits back into the facility. Under a non-dividend-paying arrangement, its directors/stockholders do not receive any individual remuneration.

History Highlights

July 3, 1937—Del Mar opens its gates for the first time
and Bing Crosby is there to greet a crowd of more than 15,000. Twenty-two days
of racing are presented that first season “where the turf meets the surf.”

August 12, 1938—Seabiscuit, with
„Iceman“ George Woolf aboard, outduels Ligaroti to win their historic
$25,000 match race before 20,000 at the track and a nationwide radio audience.
Sporting types note the race put Del
Mar “on the map.”

September 3, 1956—On Labor Day, John Longden becomes the world’s winningest rider with
victory No. 4,871 aboard Arrogate in the Del Mar Handicap. Longden surpasses
the mark of Englishman Sir Gordon Richards.

September 7, 1970—On Labor Day, Bill Shoemaker displaces John Longden as the sport’s winningest
rider, scoring astride Dares J for his 6,033 triumph.

Breeders Cup 2021

August 10, 1991—Golden Eagle Farm’s
3-year-old Best Pal, owned and bred by Mr. and Mrs. John C. Mabee, wins the
inaugural running of the $1-million Pacific Classic.

July 28, 1993—On opening day, Del Mar unveils its
completed $80-million grandstand, doubling its capacity in a state-of-the-art
facility. The award-winning complex was completed one year ahead of schedule
and under budget.

August 10, 1996—Two-time Horse of the Year Cigar comes to Del Mar for the sixth Pacific Classic and a
chance to go past Citation and his modern-day record of 16 straight wins. But
the track’s then largest crowd ever—44,181—witnesses a shocker instead of a
crowning when 40-1 Dare And Go upsets the 1-10 favorite.

2007
– 2014 – As
mandated by the State of California, Del Mar raced on a synthetic main track
surface called Polytrack for eight seasons. It returned to natural dirt in
2015.

November 2014 – Del Mar conducts a
16-day fall race meeting, the start of a new dual-season racing cycle for the
seaside oval. The meet proved highly successful at both the wickets and the
turnstiles boding well for future sessions.

November 3-4, 2017 – Del Mar hosts its
first Breeders’ Cup Championship, which proves a smashing success. New betting
marks are established, the track draws rave reviews and the racing proves world
class. B.C. folks schedule a return in 2021.

California •$355.3 million to the Del Mar Fairgrounds

•$25.8 million to California
municipalities, including $10.2 million to the City of Del Mar

•$9.0 million to charity •$70.9 million
to equine research and breeding

▲ The track’s employment during the summer
race meet exceeds 5,150; its annual payroll is $33.1 million

▲ A three-year (2017- 2019) economic impact
report by Sport Management Research Institute pegged Del Mar’s impact in the
local community at $299.62 million with each racing visitor spending $2,335 on
average

▲ North County hotels have an average occupancy of 69.8% on an annual basis, but in August — during the heart of the Del Mar summer meet — occupancy jumps to 86.7%, with many hotels exceeding 90%

Led by Knicks Go and Essential Quality, the multiple Grade 1-winning favorites for the $6 million Longines Breeders‘ Cup Classic; $2 million Longines Breeders‘ Cup Distaff favorite Letruska; and defending Longines Breeders‘ Cup Turf (G1) winner Tarnawa (IRE), 196 horses have been pre-entered for the 2021 Breeders‘ Cup World Championships.

The entries include eight returning champions – Knicks Go, Essential Quality, Tarnawa, AudaryaOrder of Australia, Gamine, Glass Slippers and Golden Pal.

The 56 international contingent is a record number, and spans seven countries: Great Britain has the biggest group of raiders with 26, followed by Ireland with 17 horses. Also, Japan (8), France (2), Argentina (1), Peru (1) and South Africa (1).

„International competition at its highest level is the hallmark of the Breeders‘ Cup, and we thank the horsemen and women who prepare these outstanding equine athletes for the biggest races in their careers for their participation“ – said Drew Fleming, Breeders‘ Cup President & CEO.

Tarnawa (IRE) completed an undefeated season last year with a 1-length victory in the Breeders‘ Cup Turf (G1) at Keeneland, providing trainer Dermot Weld with his first Breeders‘ Cup win. This year, the 5-year-old debuted in August when she won the G3 Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown, and has since been second in two Group 1 “Win and You’re In” races in Leopardstown’s Irish Champion Stakes in September and the 3rd Oct Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the Breeders‘ Cup Turf a record six times. He saddles 4-year-old filly Love this year, as she won Royal Ascot’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes to earn her place.

The Americans best hope is 4-year-old son of Kingman, Domestic Spending, a two-time Grade 1 winner in 2021 for trainer Chad Brown.

Breeders‘ Cup Classic

Likely favourite Knicks Go has never run 1 1/4m before: he’s going to have to hope the extra 1/8m doesn’t favour his Godolphin-bred stablemate Essential Quality.

Knicks Go, Belmont Stakes winner Essential Quality, and Woodward Stakes winner Art Collector all enter the Breeders’ Cup Classic having won three straight races.

$9,678,279 is the combined purse earnings of the two leading contenders for the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Classic, both trained by Brad Cox.
Breeders‘ Cup Turf

Returning champion Tarnawa is likely favorite, but this is a very difficult race to call.

Breeders‘ Cup Juvenile

Fourteen 2-year-olds are entered in this star-making event. All eyes will be on this field when making Triple Crown 2022 predictions.
IV. Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar Preview

by Umberto Rispoli

Fri-Sat 5 & 6th November – Breeders’ Cup World Championships, Del Mar

Well, we’ve certainly saved
the best for last on this season’s blog, as we round off a spectacular summer
at Del Mar with the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. It’s a real honour to
have the sport’s showpiece event return to this picturesque and flourishing
Fairgounds venue where, as Bing Crosby famously sang, the turf meets the surf.

As one of my adopted home
tracks throughout the year, let me first give you a
few thoughts on riding this storied Oval circuit. Naturally, as it’s my racing
base, I’ve ridden here in work and on recent racedays over the past few weeks,
and I must say the general bias towards the pacesetters getting home, which has
always been a distinct trend here, seems even more pronounced this year. As
usual, and as with most US dirt surfaces, outside draws are advantaged while
the only insurmountable challenge appears to be
the dreaded rail position, a significant worry for any horse occupying it on
this surface. Gate-speed and tactical position are the keys, therefore, as it’s
not easy to come from behind.

On the turf, it’s a similar(ish)
story on draw and race-shape characteristics, but the Del Mar groundskeepers
have done a fantastic job cultivating a lush covering of grass which gives
everyone a fair shot. And with the weather set
relatively fair (the sun is forecast to break through for temperatures in the
high-teens) I’m expecting few surprises from the elements.

Right, let’s not waste another moment and
crack straight on to this weekend’s blue-riband contest…

Umberto’s Breeders’ Cup Classic Big Race 1-2-3:

Winner: Hot Rod Charlie
Danger: Essential Quality
Place: Max Player

Place your bet on Antepost Breeders‘ Cup Classic

This year’s renewal of the $6m Classic really
is the crowning crescendo on a glittering card. It’s
potentially the best race of the season and – I kid you not, guys – of the nine
horses assembled, six have a decent chance under my lights. Hot Rod Charlie
just gets my nod (more on the main protagonists below) as I think he’s the one
in peak condition as the season nears its close. Plus, his regular partner and my
West Coast colleague, Flavien Prat, alongside his part-owner Bill Strauss. are
good friends. So, perhaps I’m slightly open to accusations of bias!

Hot Rod Charlie – always works well when he
has a target to run at and this week has been no different. The subtle
French-cut blinkers he’s been wearing, only in the morning, were reintroduced
after the Pennsylvania Derby – they help Charlie stay alert in a work situation
and enjoy optimum conditioning. His recent work was visually on a par with his
work prior to that PA Derby and with a ferocious pace seemingly assured,
through the likes of Knicks Go and Medina Spirit, the race could be set up for
him and Essential Quality.

Hot Rod Charlie, Photo: TT

Essential Quality – as I say, also seems sure to
get the fast lead he craves, and it’s impossible to quibble with his form. He’s
a street fighter who always seems to do enough, so expect him to be in the
shake-up. Sporting the famous Godolphin blue and a
blemish-free winning streak until arguably unlucky in the Derby, he’s my
principal danger in the race. Although, it must be said, he wasn’t not as
unlucky as “Charlie” in Kentucky, where pretty much everything went wrong for
my selection from the get-go (badly bumped, baulked and still came home running
despite being forced wide). Another reason why I give the son of Oxbow a
marginal edge over Essential Quality.

Knicks Go – last year’s Dirt Mile winner
will again bid to assert his serious speed and he’s certainly the fastest horse
in the line-up. The big grey has looked his usual eager self in the build-up, yet
I feel that will count against him down the Del Mar straight.

Medina Spirit – the other who will doubtless
contest the early stages with Knicks Go and the the worry for connections is
they will cut each other’s throats, especially when fired up out of the gates
by other contenders keen to take a prominent position. Let’s side with those
with better, and more consistent, strategic pace instead.

Max Player – just keeps improving and
improving, so I can see him claiming a few more fancied scalps here, as his
upward curve has still to plateau. It’s definitely the toughest race of the
weekend, trust me, but this is one of the toughest horses around. Hailing from
Steve Asmussen’s all-conquering hard, he may just be on the right trajectory as
a long season catches up with other more proven performers.

Umberto’s rides big-race weekend fancies

The thing about the
Breeders’ Cup is you can already feel the atmosphere has really cranked up a
few notches, even in the run-up to the main event this week. It’s a rarefied
air that some horses have to be taught to breathe. As for us jockeys, whether
you’re on an outsider or a favourite, you just have to be here. So, I’m glad to
be in with a live shot in a handful of races, where some of my mounts could
surprise at big prices.

Juvenile Fillies’ Turf

This 14-runner event looks very open and the betting backs that up. It can always get so trappy and tactical with two-year-olds but Pizza Bianca is a very tough individual with perhaps the most rock-solid claims. I wouldn’t put anyone off backing my charge, Helens Well, for a place. We broke her maiden duck together and I’ve always liked her. She’s progressive and shouldn’t be 50-1. For a more realistic danger, though, look to Chad Brown’s Consumer Spending, a filly who could be coming into her own. And as regular readers of my blog will know, Brown is a handler whom I rate super highly.

Juvenile Turf

Another full field here, and you could throw a blanket over most of them in terms of what they’ve achieved. Which is why I’m stunned Stolen Base is 33-1, having run such a promising second last time at Keeneland to Tiz The Bomb. The latter is well-fancied here, so surely my guy has a huge chance too?!

Again, perhaps only for the places. Indeed, the home hopefuls may give best to a transatlantic raider in the shape of Hugo Palmer’s Dubawi Legend who has acclimatised well and whose stable knows the time of day. James Doyle may have to work a little harder from a wide draw, but he’s my pick.

Goldikova Stakes

The market makes this a match between Princess Grace and Going Global who theoretically holds a 3lb advantage on ratings. It’s hard to argue to be honest. Even the best-laid plans went awry for this thrilling filly when her winning streak came to an end at the hands of Madone, but Going Global has since regained the winning thread in no uncertain fashion. Stick with her, while I fear I may be battling for the minors aboard Constantia here. She’ll plug on to good effect, though.

The Mile

Smooth Like Strait with Umberto Rispoli aboard, wins the Grade I $300,000 Shoemaker Mile horse race on 31.05.2021 at Santa Anita Park, Photo: TT

As you may know, Smooth Like Strait is simply my favourite horse in training. Nearly a decade ago, of course, Wise Dan was a star over the mile for the likes of Velazquez and Lezcano and “Smooth” reminds me of that amazing horse a little, you know. He certainly retains a similar consistency and eight furlongs is his trip, make no mistake. Annoyingly, of late, he’s invariably finding one too good but we’ve got a great draw in the two stall for the FanDuel Mile where he can again put his tactical nous and great gate speed to devastating effect. Although his front-running style will always leave him potentially vulnerable to a fast-finisher, a win in this super competitive heat will make up for a season where he’s only been a whisker shy of greatness. His work sectionals have been sharp and this race has been the plan all year.

Hopefully, we can pull it off together from the front end. It will take a Herculean effort against the likes of Space Blues and In love but I couldn’t ask for a more willing or talented partner. He’s thriving on his racing which, it itself, is a joy to see.

Filly & Mare Turf

My mount Going To Vegas delivered the hat-trick in Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita, a track of similar set-up to Del Mar, so she could hardly be going into battle in better form. Don’t get me wrong, she’ll run her race, but I’ve been seriously taken with the relentless rise of War Like Goddess this term, and I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t tell you she is a formidable foe. In fact, I said a few starts back that there’s no need to oppose her until she loses her dominant form, and I stand by that. She’s not a bad price either, considering she’s on a five-timer.

The Turf

Sisfahan trained by Henk Grewe exercises during the morning training session for Breeders‘ Cup, Photo: TT

Sadly, it seems highly unlikely that Friar’s Road will get his shot at glory here, as he’s fourth reserve. He’d been going really well in our preparations together, too, which is a shame. Tarnawa is an obvious favourite here to repeat last year’s heroics and you could make a strong case that this mare would’ve won the Arc with a clear passage last time. Still, even this proven globetrotter may have to give best to a couple of local lads in Gufo and Domestic Spending who both know every inch of this track and could make homefield advantage count.

German Derby winner Sisfahan comes with a second place to Arc winner Torquator Tasso from Grosser Preis von Baden. Winner Torquator Tasso has beaten Tarnawa, Broome and Walton Street in this specific race. With this form anything is possible for german trained Sisfahan.

Saturday 21st August – Pacific Classic & Del Mar Oaks, Del Mar

There’s a huge weekend
upcoming around the Pacific Classic, with classy horses and competitive fields
wherever you look. It’s undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Del Mar
summer. Notwithstanding the Breeders’ Cup making a welcome pit-stop at this
picturesque La Jolla venue in early November, of course! But that’s still all
to come this winter. For now, though, let’s simply enjoy the present,
especially being back at the famous Fairgounds.

Before I get to this
weekend’s big double-bill in the shape of the Del Mar Oaks and the feature
Grade 1 Pacific Classic, a few of thoughts on the Del
Mar track itself. As it’s my home base, I’ve ridden here in work and on
racedays over the opening month of the season, and I must confess there’s been
slightly less dirt on the track that in time gone by. I feel this has
contributed to a bias towards the pacesetters, which has always been a
noticeable advantage but seems even more pronounced this year. As usual, and
like most US dirt surfaces, outside draws are favoured but not impossible to
overcome. Nevertheless, the only insurmountable challenge
appears to be the dreaded rail position, a significant worry for any horse
occupying it for sure.

Back on the turf course, as
I mentioned last month, the Del Mar ground-staff have done a wonderful job cultivating
a lush covering of grass which gives everyone a fair shot, even if you can
already hear the hooves rattle! And with the weather set
fair for clear blue skies in the mid-20s, I’m expecting few surprises from the
elements. Therefore, make no mistake, this turf is on the firm side and will
only quicken up as the weekend action unfolds.

Right, now on to this weekend’s main events…

Umberto’s Del Mar Oaks Big Race 1-2-3:

Winner: Going Global
Danger: Madone
Place: Fluffy Socks

Bet online at RaceBets

Closing Remarks – may be listed amongst the outsiders, but my
horse certainly has place credentials. She tried the dirt last time which
wasn’t to her liking so you can put a line through that supposedly lacklustre
effort. It just wasn’t her. She remains in good heart at home and will relish
the return to the turf here. I couldn’t be confident with the likes of Going
Global in opposition, but I wouldn’t put you off taking her for a place.

Going Global – well, even the best-laid plans went awry for
this superb filly last time when her winning streak came to an end at the hands
of Madone who naturally renews rivalry here. That was a shock result to some
extent, although Going Global didn’t have the best of passages, even if I’d
struggle to say it was troubled. Still, my heart and mind align that this is
the best filly in town – and it’s a familiar town where they all seem have
raced against each other along progressively exposed form-lines. I expect her
to regain the winning thread.

Madone – true, there was no real fluke about Madone turning over the favourite
last time, and time itself may well prove she’s right up there with the better
three-year-old fillies by the end of this campaign. There’s no reason to leave
Madone out of the three, but all things being equal Going Global should exact
her revenge and turn the tables in my book.

Fluffy Socks – you could throw a horse-blanket over most of
the market principals in terms of draw. The admirable Javanica could put the
pace to the race, while Soaring Sky (on whom I was offered the ride) is an
unknown quantity from across the pond for the formidable Jessie Harrington
team. Still, Fluffy Socks may edge them both. I’ve so much respect for Chad
Brown, particularly when he ships something to the West Coast. It’s a tip in
itself, just check out the stats. Therefore, I’d marginally give this one the
edge in the places over my own mount, Closing Remarks.

Umberto’s Pacific Classic Big Race 1-2-3:

Winner: Express Train
Danger: Dr Post
Place: Royal Ship

Direct to RaceBets

Saturday’s Grade 1 $1 million Pacific Classic
has attracted a white-hot, nine-runner field in which local Grade 2 San Diego
Handicap prep winner Express Train will break from gate five as a well-drawn
but lukewarm favourite. Only one horse has won the Pacific Classic and
Breeders’ Cup Classic in the same calendar year (Accelerate landed the double
in 2018 and received the Eclipse Award as champion older dirt male for the
year) so be sure you’re looking for a horse that in peak condition this week,
not months down the track in the grand World Championships finale.

Express Train – and that opening stanza is basically the
reason why I narrowly prefer Express Train here. The Pacific has been his
target for a while and there’s no thought for tomorrow about his camp, he’s
been trained with this day in mind. He was the fastest in midweek work at the
track, comfortably outpointing a useful stablemate in the process, and has
already proved his comfort level with this different type of California dirt.
That’s important because the Del Mar dirt has an unusual feel to other states,
so it takes some knowing.

Dr Post – won the Westchester and Monmouth Cup this year on the East Coast and was
runner-up in last year’s Belmont Stakes, so his strong credentials are there
for all to see. Joel Rosario will be back aboard the son of Quality Road here,
which can only help his chances.

Royal Ship – listed as a tissue 7-2 second poke, having
reverted from turf to dirt as the victor of the Grade 2 Californian in in
April. He is readily preferred to stablemate Tizamagician, dropping back in
distance from a recent Grade 3 Del Mar win, who is the second-string of an
uncoupled entry for Richard Mandella. Both horses have fuel to burn from the
stalls, but will be eager not to cut each other’s throats, especially as the
Pacific Classic has witnessed some last-gasp rallies and collapses in its
history. Mike Smith, who is tied for the most Pacific Classic wins with four, will
fancy his chances aboard this Brazilian-bred.

Tripoli – if there is to be a late closer to dig out the win in the shadow of the
wire, it may well be Tripoli. I rode him a couple of times on the grass, and
kept telling connections to stick him on the dirt for the benefit of his action
– and he’s really made the leap to devastating effect, it appears.

Magic On Tap – stumbled at the start of the San Diego, and
postures to be more forwardly placed with a clean start. He bounces from trap
six, just outside Express Train and could apply pressure after winning the Triple
Bend sprinting at Santa Anita this spring. Magic On Tap’s trainer Bob Baffert
has won the Pacific Classic six times, tied with Bobby Frankel for the race’s
all-time lead.

The Pacific Classic is contested over 1 ¼
miles, the same distance as the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Kentucky
Derby. Consequently, no surprise that this year the Pacific Classic is a “Win
and You’re In” qualifying race for the aforementioned BCC, which means that the winner of the Pacific Classic will
receive an all-expenses-paid berth in the starting gate of the $6 million
Classic in the Fall.

Other big-race weekend fancies

After a welcome and deserved few months off from racing, Grade 1 winner Hit The Road will return in the $300,000 Del Mar Mile Stakes, a Grade 2 also staged Saturday at Del Mar. There have been no problems with the horse, he just runs well fresh, so connections have been wise to exercise patience. He could be on the way to a rematch with my old chum Smooth Like Strait later this year, having just pipped him last time out. I obviously hugely respect both horses and their trainers and hope Hit The Road can bolster his CV here – even if I may plan for a marginally different result in November, since I chose the wrong horse last time. But that’s the lot of a jockey in a sport of opinions. In short, we’ll see!

A spectacular day concludes with the
ever-competitive Del Mar Handicap, won last year by Red King with me aboard.
So, many may be surprised to see I’m not on top this weekend. I’d actually already
committed to another contender, which then pulled up with a small injury at
home, and in the meantime Red King’s connections had booked Joel to deputise
for me. Fair enough, that’s race-riding, and the faster they go the better for
a repeat performance from him. United,
however, is my pick and the likely favourite, with Acclimate an assured
pacemaker who could set it up for him. As I say, it’s the most open race of the
day, and things can invariably get tactical on the grass. But United could be a
fairly decent price, despite his prominent rank in the betting.

… right, that’s my lot. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks to assess a dazzling big-race triple-feature in the form of Del Mar’s Futurity, Derby & Debutante at the start of September. Until then, stay lucky!”

by Umberto Rispoli

Saturday 31st July – Bing Crosby Stakes, Del Mar

It was such a shame to be
touched off aboard Smooth Like Strait in last weekend’s feature race, where we
had to give best inside the final furlong to a powerful late run from a
rejuvenated United who was recording back-to-back victories in the Eddie Reed.
Although his front-running style will always leave him potentially vulnerable
to a fast-finisher, I feel we got the tactics and pace about right, we just
couldn’t quite give the weight away to United.

Of course, I would be very confident
of reversing positions, considering we were conceding 4lbs to the winner over
an unfavoured nine furlongs. Eight furlongs is definitely Smooth’s optimum
trip, and we’ll see him put to that effect next time out, whether his trainer
Mike McCarthy keeps him local for the Del Mar Mile, or we journey to contest
another huge pot in Kentucky.

In any case, I can happily
report that Smooth has come out of the race well and continues to thrive at
home, ahead of bigger battles and the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar in November. We
can’t wait. As for United, while we flagged him as last week’s Danger, I must
admit I was slightly surprised at how quickly he bounced back to top form. At
least until connections revealed post-race that there was an issue with his
feed and a twisted shoe previously. That’s just the peaks and valleys of racing,
of course, and we can’t ask for much more than two fantastic horses giving
their all down the stretch. Therefore, as Mike says, we’ll simply pick up the
pieces and move on to the next assignment.

Speaking of the next
challenge, and just before we get stuck into this weekend’s corking double-bill
in the shape of the Bing Crosby & Clement L. Hirsch Stakes, both Grade 1 tent-poles, some more
thoughts on the Del Mar track itself. I’ve now ridden here over this summer’s
opening two weekends, and the dirt course is bedding in nicely for this
season’s schedule. As with virtually all dirt tracks stateside, outside draws are
preferred, as you can pick your spot and quickly get a handle on the speed. As
a result, I’m not too disappointed that my plum ride in the Bing Crosby, Quick
Tempo, has drawn the five gate out of nine contenders. We’ll still look to
break sharpish mind you.

Over on the turf course, as
I mentioned last week, the Del Mar groundskeepers have done superb job creating
a lush covering of grass which gives everyone a fair shot, even if you can
already hear the hooves rattle! And with the weather set
fair for clear blue skies in the mid 20s, I’m expecting few surprises from the
elements. So, make no mistake, this turf is on the firm side and will only quicken
up as the weekend unfolds with the culmination of this four-day meet.

Right, now on to this weekend’s main event…

Umberto’s Bing Crosby Big Race 1-2-3:

Winner: Brickyard Ride
Danger: Quick Tempo
Place: Dr Schivel

Bet online at RaceBets

Quick Tempo – Just the one start this
term, and still relatively inexperienced overall, However, be advised this is a
flashy horse who is in a hurry, both on the course and powering up the
sprinting ranks. Connections have given Big Tempo time to mature and progress
at home and his latest piece of work was explosive. In short, I’m very happy to
have secured the ride here and he could surprise many observers. Big Tempo is a
pacey and consistent horse who can effortlessly adjust from his middle-draw if
I can time the break correctly. His latest effort may’ve only yielding a
runners-up berth, but the form of that race has worked out brilliantly in the
interim. I wouldn’t put you for the places at least.

Shooters Shoot – My old pal whom I’ve
deserted here in favour of Quick Tempo. While that shows the regard in which I
clearly hold the latter, Shooters Shoot will run his usual game race, I just
sense that he’ll be running on too late at the death here.

C Z Rocket – As I’ve already alluded, I reckon they’ll
go helter-skelter from the off in this one, so the key will be making sure we
don’t cut each other’s throats up front. C Z Rocket won’t probably do much to
help me in that regard, and he’s my joker for the race. True, you might respond
that he’s not much of a wildcard considering a wonderful-yet-tough campaign so
far this year, but remember that he won’t be allowed to run on Lasix here and
therein lies the rub. He seems to really appreciate that assistance so far,
which is why I’ve just left him out of the frame – if a demanding campaign
catches up with him it might be now, but few have better form credentials.

Brickyard Ride – it’s tough to pick a
favourite in this open-looking contest. Yet, if pressed, I’d opt for Brickyard
Ride who looks pretty bombproof in a race where getting on the lead could be
pivotal. This horse has excellent tactical pace and great gate, not to mention
all the best sectionals in recent history. I have to give him the edge.

Dr Schivel – Flavien Prat is a top-quality jockey who
lets his riding to the talking, but he might as well have given us a strong
recommendation himself, after jumping off Collusion Illusion in favour of Dr
Schivel here. It’s a tip in itself, as I thought the former horse was not
without a chance. Dr Schivel has won his last three starts and is clearly
thriving around our fair local circuits at Del Mar and Santa Anita. Naturally,
this represents his biggest Grade 1 task to date, and his rapid progression
might be halted here. However, with Mr Prat in the plate, I expect him to be
there or thereabouts at the wire.

Del Mar – Weekend Ones To Watch

The Chosen Vron (Race 6, Friday) – Definitely my best chance on Friday’s
card. This imposing Cal-bred is four-from-five, having racked up a quick
hat-trick of late, and I can only see him extending that trend here. He turned
over the well-fancied Classier last time out, and there doesn’t seem anything
of that calibre amongst his rivals here. And while he’s done all his running –
and winning! – at Santa Anita, as I say, Del Mar is a very comparable test and
track.

Astronomer (Race 3, Saturday) – a
very likeable half-brother to Mr Impossible who I know well and am hugely fond
of, this lad could be even better one day. Owned by the powerful combination of
Lady Bamford and Michael Tabor, Astronomer is making all the right moves at
home, and even if I fear he may be one workout sky of knowing the time of day, he’s
got a lovely draw and this two-bend track shouldn’t scupper his lack of
experience. The early tissue prices suggest he might go off at generous odds
with some more proven sorts in opposition. However, I believe he can overcome
his inexperience as the race unfolds. Keep an eye on him for his canny handler Simon
Callaghan, for whom I always like to ride.

… right, that’s my lot. I’ll be back in a few weeks’ time to assess another
big-race double-header in the shape of the Pacific Classic and the Del
Mar Oaks towards the end of August.
Until then, stay lucky!”

N.B. At the time of filing his blog, entries for Sunday’s Clement L. Hirsch Stakes were yet to be finalised by Del Mar.

Saturday 24th July – Eddie Read Stakes & San Clemente, Del Mar

It’s great to be back at the
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, located amid the famous Fairgounds, where I have
some fantastic recent memories, having prevailed as the top jock of last season
at this picturesque venue. It’s all set to be an even more spectacular summer
by the surf this term, though, now that the fans are back, bringing with them
that much-missed combination of atmosphere and expectation around the best of
SoCal racing.

In any case, we jockeys live
to breathe that rarefied air of pressure, and hopefully it’s a cauldron in
which I thrive. Particularly because the Breeders’ Cup is also coming to La
Jolla later this year, so hopefully my local course knowledge will give all my
mounts an edge from now until early November!

Before I get to this
weekend’s exciting double-header in the shape of the Eddie Read Stakes and the San Clemente, our
Grade 2 highlights, first a couple of thoughts on the Del Mar track itself. I
rode here in the opening weekend last week, and I must admit there was slightly
less dirt on the track that in time gone by. But it’s already heavier and
fairer this week. As ever, and like most US dirt surfaces, outside draws are
favoured but not impossible to overcome. Nevertheless, the only real hex is the dreaded rail post position, a
huge concern for any horse occupying it for sure.

Ostensibly, it’s a
different, fairer story on the turf, particularly since the grounds-staff have
done such a wonderful job preparing a beautiful, deep covering of grass that
should look after all contenders and give them a legitimate shot. That said, I
feel it’s already running pretty firm so, as with last year, I reckon the
front-runners should enjoy a big advantage as the season progresses. True, we
saw a few decent come-from-behind efforts last weekend, but that was more
reflective of some taking types overcoming the run of the race. Make no
mistake, I plan to bounce out and make all on quite a few, or at least sit
handy, and I expect that trend will only extend throughout the summer.

As for local lads and trainers to watch, keep an eye out for Walther Solis whose stable is on the rise with all his inmates in good heart, it seems. Although that comment especially applies to his two-year-olds, who seem well forward and represent and promising wider crop. Solis could certainly upset a few standing dishes and the established order around Del Mar, but I still expect the local trainers’ championship to be tightly contested between Richard Baltas, Peter Miller and Phil D’Amato.

Enough said, now on to this weekend’s coming
attractions…

Umberto’s Eddie Read Big Race 1-2-3:

Winner: Smooth Like Strait
Danger: Say The Word
Place: United

Direct to Eddie Read Stakes

Smooth Like Strait – we might as well start with my favourite
horse and the classiest in the race, according to official figures. In short,
I’m not about to desert my old pal here, just three weeks on from a wonderful
win in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita. True, this is a competitive
heat with some established dangers and dangerous unknowns, but Smooth Like
Strait is working well at home and seems sure to show his form, so I’m going to
keep the faith. After all, nothing is easy on the road to the Breeders’ Cup!

As I’ve mentioned before, “Smooth” has bags
of tactical pace, which always grants me a strategic advantage in these Grade 1
contests, and continues to mature into a well-balanced and fully furnished
four-year-old. He’s now prevailed in seven of his 15 starts and bagged a wafer
shy of $1m in prize money, so let’s smash though that significant barrier on
the way to even bigger tests.

United – super talented, but has to bounce back after what I can only describe
as a very weird performance last time. Yes, that’s a technical term! United won
the Eddie Read in grand style as favourite last year, but appears to have lost
his way of late. You’re taking a return to form on trust – and regardless, this
is a much tougher renewal.

Say The Word – came close(ish) last time, and a mile is the
absolute minimum for this one, to my jaundiced eye. In fact, I can see Say The
Word coming into his own at a mile and a half. Plus, he’d then neatly avoid
Smooth Like Strait, so we’d all be happy! Admittedly, he put in an encouraging
effort behind us last time and rates my main danger. However, I can see no
reason why this six-year-old gelding would suddenly turn the tables on
“Smooth”.

Umberto’s San Clemente Big Race 1-2-3:

Winner: Going Global
Danger: Pizzazz
Place: Closing Remarks

Direct to San Clemente Stakes

Going Global – a sure-fire favourite and it’s impossible to
take issue with the way in which she keeps clocking up the wins, improving
along the way as she’s posted a five-timer, stemming back all the way to more
lowly beginnings at a nursery in Dundalk! The subsequent transatlantic trip has
clearly been the making of Going Global and, as I’ve alluded to, few know the
demands of Santa Anita and Del Mar better than her handler Phil D’Amato. The
San Clemente is just the next step in Phil’s carefully mapped-out game plan, staying
in California for the foreseeable future. I’ve seen her working recently too,
and she looks a bit of a monster. Who am I to argue?

Closing Remarks – well, I suppose I am aboard one of Going
Global’s chief rivals here and we’ve certainly got a shot if the favourite
underperforms. Closing Remarks is actually entered the day before on Friday (over
seven furlongs, drawn one on the dirt, which is a bit of a stinker!) so I’ve
advised connections to come here instead on the grass which should suit her
better anyway. If she takes her chance, we should work our way into the frame
at worst hopefully.

Pizzazz – a keen sort, who typically relaxes into herself once her ears are up
and she’s restrained. Pizzazz has a good draw and should break next to Going
Global and enjoy a favourable passage. Although there’s also the risk that
contesting things with the market leader will light her up, and that’s my only
note of concern. She looks the next-best in this field.

Jibber Jabber – my alternative ride, who I’ll probably hop on,
if Closing Remarks engages on Friday’s card instead. A nice sort, mind you, but
just not up to this level at this stage in her career.

Del Mar – Weekend One To Watch

Fi Fi Pharoah (Race 7, Friday) – Bidding for a hat-track and I can see no
obstacle to her maintain the triumphant thread on Friday’s taster card. Fi Fi
Pharoah is a Cal-bred doing everything well at home and filling out pleasingly.
I’m confident she can extend her winning sequence here on the way to better
things.

… right, that’s my lot. I’ll be back in seven days’ time to assess another big-race double-bill in the shape of the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes & Bing Crosby Stakes. Until then, stay lucky!”
